Highlights of 2007 Thai Constitution
In August 2007, Thailand’’s ruling Council for National Security (CNS) subjected a new draft constitution to a referendum, which was subsequently endorsed by 57 percent of voters. While the new constitution provides for more community participation in local politics, there are also disturbing provisions at the national level which are ostensibly linked to designs that will strengthen the bureaucracy’s political role. Moreover, the new constitution does not clearly spell out changes in the decentralized setting, which will be left to a new organic law. To access the highlights of the 2007 constitution click here.
